Are you overwhelmed with all of the new wedding traditions that have been surfacing these days? Maybe something more simple from back in the day would be a better fit for you. Let’s take a look at some of the wedding traditions that have gone away over the years.
1. Writing a letter to your spouse the night before the wedding.
This tradition was very common for the bride and groom. They would write love letters to each other and place them in a special box. The letters would stay in the box until their first anniversary when they would open them together.
2. Planting a pine tree outside of your new home.
Back in the day, pine trees used to symbolize new beginnings. Couples would plant a pine tree in their yard as part of the ceremony for a bit of good luck.
3. Hiding a charm in your wedding cake.
This Victorian tradition is when tiny charms attached to ribbons were placed inside wedding cakes. They were decorated with a future fortune and guests would pull them out during the cake pull ceremony before the cake was cut and served.
4. Putting sixpence in the bride’s shoe.
You know the saying, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” It actually ends with a sixpence in her shoe! The father of the bride was to give her a lucky coin to place in her shoe for good health and wealth for the new couple.
Hopefully you can use one or several of these to make your wedding your own!
